HAVANA, CUBA, 2013

Cuba still has a long way to go to eradicate discrimination and prejudices in its society, but people of all sexual orientations and gender identities are beginning to live openly and be accepted by society.

Matthew Sherwood is a photojournalist and documentary photographer based between Toronto, Canada and Sydney, Australia. He works regularly for Canada’s largest newspapers, news magazines and wires, as well as international clients. When he’s not on assignment, Matthew focuses on long-term documentary work. He believes education is the most important factor in overcoming social problems, and uses his work to inform people of past and present social issues in Canada and abroad. His work has been recognized by American Photography, the Magenta Foundation, National Pictures of the Year, among others.

Photojournalism program testimonial

The instructors at Loyalist College truly cared about my success and encouraged me throughout the two years I spent there. Twice-yearly portfolio reviews with the leading photo editors in Canadian media organizations initiated many relationships that helped me break into the industry. I left with the knowledge I needed, both technical and conceptual, to begin a career in a tough business.

Lars Hagberg works out of Kingston

A man plays hockey on a frozen Lake Ontario during sunset in Kingston, Ont., on Monday, Feb. 22, 2016. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Lars Hagberg

Lars Hagberg have been based in Kingston, Ont. since graduating from Loyalist College in 2007. Some of the editorial clients that he shoots for include, the Canadian Press, Reuters, Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and AFP(Agence France Presse). Hagberg mostly shoots general assignments… from portraits, to sport news, to features to press conferences. He also shoots for Queen’s University and other non-editorial clients in Kingston.Hagberg covers a good part of Eastern Ontario, from Port Hope to Brockville, from Kingston to Ottawa. He has also photographed many times at CFB Trenton, as it is Canada’s biggest air base. So whether troops arrive or depart, it tends to be national news.

“I love being outside and shooting pictures. In Kingston we have a wonderful waterfront, so it doesn’t matter which time of the year it is. There are always people doing interesting activities along the water front. The picture that I attached has all of that. Great Canadian winter activity, sunset and the water front. I also love how the ice made a great pattern as a backdrop for the skater. Just taking the camera with you and walking around looking for pictures sometimes generates the best outcome. Whether that is for a full moon rising, thick fog or kite surfing.”

The photojournalism department at Loyalist College provided me with great support from the teachers to learn the craft of photography. It taught us how to see extraordinary pictures in the everyday. It was wonderful to have the fellow students to bounce ideas off of and share our love of photography.
